Common Types of Oral Surgery

There are many different types of surgical procedures that are used to treat conditions in the mouth, these can range from simple to complex and may be medically necessary or carried out for cosmetic reasons. Examples of treatments that may be carried out by a specialist oral surgeon include:

  • Wisdom tooth removal
Also known as your third molars, these teeth are the last ones to push through the gums, and generally do so when a person is in their teens or early 20s. While many people have their wisdom teeth grow in without any problems, some don’t have the space in their mouth for them and the teeth can grow in at unusual angles or become impacted. In these situations the teeth will need to be surgically removed.

  • Dental implants
Tooth loss can be the result of many different things from injuries and trauma, through to tooth decay and periodontal disease. dental implants are an excellent choice for reconstructing a person’s smile, and they can also help to prevent deterioration of the jaw bone and unwanted movement of the remaining teeth.

  • Removal of lumps, swellings and cysts
Soft tissue surgery is another common type of oral surgery, and can be used to treat a number of different conditions in the mouth.

Some of the other types of oral surgeries may deal with cleft lips, cleft palates, facial trauma and the root or pulp of the tooth.

The Procedures

Although oral surgery will differ for every patient, depending on the type of work they require, as well as their specific dental health needs, it’s important to note that oral surgery should never be painful.

Anaesthetics are often used during oral surgery to numb the area and ensure the patient’s comfort. Meanwhile, pain medications and other therapies such as hot or cold compresses can help to reduce any soreness.

Oral surgery generally requires a minimum of three visits to the dentist. The first appointment will be a consultation to discuss your requirements and treatment options; the second will be scheduled for the procedure itself, while the third trip to the dentist will be for a follow-up check. In some cases, additional appointments will be necessary to carry out the different stages of the procedure.

After any oral surgery, it’s important to follow any after-care instructions. It’s likely that you’ll be told to avoid eating foods that are very hot, cold, sticky or hard for a few days, as your teeth will probably be more sensitive than normal. You should also be sure to learn about the proper care for any dental appliances that were placed and take care look after the health of your teeth by continuing to brush and floss on a regular basis.

The results of my Invisalign are perfect, and all the future treatments I’ve had with him have all been excellent and painless. reviews-star.pngThe Museum Dental Suites team’s availability, warmth, and high-quality care in a very stressful and challenging dental emergency situation was incredible. We were in the city for a short time just days before I had to deliver a presentation at a large conference in Berlin when a crown on a live tooth came loose! Of course, this was on a Saturday evening to boot. In short, the team was able to get us in the next morning, get my crown not just comfortably but securely re-seated for the duration of the trip, literally making it possible to complete our journey safely and happily.
