Most adults and children have crooked and misaligned teeth, and if your teeth are not straight, do not feel pressured to straighten them because your misaligned teeth are unique to you and your personality and even charming when you smile.
However, if you do not like the look of your teeth, or they cause you problems like difficulty in speaking, you can realign them.
Baby teeth, as well as those in adults, can come out crooked or get crooked over time. For baby teeth, they sometimes come out crooked because the teeth are too small to fill their allocated space in the gum. Habits common in children like sucking on a pacifier or thumb can make a baby's teeth crooked. Heredity and genetics are also factors that make a baby's teeth crooked.
If a baby has crooked teeth, it doesn't mean that the baby's permanent teeth will be crooked. Sometimes, if the baby has crowded baby teeth, the permanent teeth may also be crowded.
If the baby had a trauma to the mouth or tooth decay that causes the baby teeth to fall out before they are due, the permanent teeth might grow out in a slanted position.
Other factors that could cause the permanent teeth to be crooked include the following.
Modern diet comprises mostly of soft, processed foods and these foods require less chewing than those our early ancestors ate. This change has altered our jaw size, making it smaller in size and since most people now have shorter jaws to accommodate the teeth, their teeth become crowded, crooked and misaligned.
Highly recommend Museum Dental Suite. Their work is of the highest calibre, professional and friendly.
I'm very thankful they for excellent aftercare advice and for making me relaxed and so well treated.
I've recommended them to both my family and friends.
I have been undertaking a cosmetic treatment (Invisalign) for around eight months here, off the back of a recommendation of a friend who had the same treatment. The professionalism and perfectionism with which my treatment was delivered was outstanding, as was the general service and were all of the staff I encountered.
My dentist Dr. Wahab Shakir was particularly great, with a friendly, reassuring manner and an eye for detail. He always went above and beyond, without ever being asked.
I'm now almost at the end of my treatment and couldn't be more pleased with how treatment has gone. Given the service and end result I'd also consider it excellent value for money.
Keep up the good work Museum Dental Suites!
Myofunctional habits are those repeated behaviours that affect the muscles or function of the mouth and face. These habits include thumb sucking, using pacifiers or bottles, tongue thrusting, and breathing through the mouth.
The upper teeth are supposed to fit slightly over the upper teeth, with the points of the upper molar fitting into the groove of the lower molar. If your teeth are not aligned in this way, it could cause malocclusion.
The different types of misalignment include underbite, overbite, open bite, and crossbite. In an overbite, your upper front teeth will protrude farther than your lower front teeth, but with an underbite, the lower front teeth over the upper front teeth.
If either or both your parents have crowded or crooked teeth, your teeth may also be crooked or misaligned. You can also inherit overbite or underbite from your parents.
If you do not visit the dentist for regular check-ups, at least twice every year, you may end up with gum diseases and cavities, which could make your teeth crooked if they are left untreated.
Poor nutrition, especially in children, may cause tooth decay and poor dental development. This may lead to having crooked teeth.
If you hit your face or mouth on something hard, it can remove your teeth from their right position, leading to one or more crooked teeth.
Sometimes, crooked teeth affect the quality of a person's life. For example, your crooked teeth can prevent you from chewing properly and causeyou pain whenever you eat.
Having crooked teeth may also make some people feel self-conscious and prevent them from smiling and interacting with people. Health issues that could result from having crooked teeth include:
With crooked teeth, it may be difficult for you to clean in between the teeth, which may cause tooth decay and gum disease. If you do not treat the gum disease, it could lead to periodontitis, which is more severeand damages the bones and teeth.
If your teeth are crooked, chewing food becomes an issue, which causes problems with digestion.
Crooked teeth can cause wear and tear on the gums, teeth, and jaw muscles. This results in cracked teeth, jaw strain, chronic headaches, and temporomandibular joint disorder.
Misaligned teeth affect the way you produce sounds, and this causes speech problems.
If you are not happy with the way your teeth looks, it could lead to social avoidance and low self-esteem.
Firstly what a great dentist, all the staff were friendly and very helpful as this was my first time here.
I had called for an emergency appointment due to a sudden cracked tooth and Dr Wahab Shakir despite the end of day fast approaching (30 minutes till close) he said he would see me.
The treatment was not straight forward due to the crack but Dr Shakir after a lengthy time managed to save the tooth/restore it and prevent what I believe most dentists would have done which install a crown - Thank you!
Highly recommend this dentist and service and I am grateful for not only seeing me within an hour but also staying passed closing time and finally for doing a Stella job.
This is a top notch dentist who makes you feel at ease which for someone liked me is important. The staff are very professional, polite, courteous and friendly. Marios, my dentist is extremely patient and cares about your dental care and the service you receive. Just received my new dentures and they have been done to a very high standard and am very pleased. I have nothing but praise for the staff and the treatment/service I received.
Straightening your crooked teeth is up to you. If the crooked teeth do not affect the quality of your life, then you can decide to leave your teeth as they are. Some people do not straighten their teeth because of lack of funds or dental health insurance, while health issues prevent some other people from getting treatment to straighten their teeth.
Some teeth imperfections could make you unique, but if your crooked teeth make you self-conscious, you should straighten them.
If you want to straighten your teeth, there are several options available for you to discuss with your dentist. Braces are usually a good option for both adults and children, provided the person's teeth, and gum is strong enough to find the braces. Braces are particularly suitable for straightening children's teeth because their gums and bone tissues are flexible and malleable.
Treatment with braces can last anywhere between 2 - 3 years depending on the severity of the case and the type of brace you use. Carrying out teeth straightening surgery is another excellent treatment option for crooked teeth.
Here are the types of braces to straighten the teeth and surgical option.
Your dentist fits fixed metal braces by attaching the brackets, bands and flexible wire on the teeth. Braces are a better option for people with complex dental alignment issues. You may also need to wear headgear at night during treatment with braces.
With recent advancements in metal braces, they are now more comfortable than they used to be. The metal brackets and wires are smaller, and you can opt for multicoloured rubber bands. The cost of metal braces ranges from £1500 - £3000, depending on the severity of your case, location, and insurance plan.
Ceramic braces are similar to the metal wire, but the archives and brackets are either clear or tooth-coloured, so they are less noticeable. They move the teeth just like metal braces although, they get stained and break easily.
The cost of getting ceramic braces is within £2000 - £5500 depending on your insurance coverage, location, and severity of the case.
Invisible braces like Invisalign offer discreetness during treatment. They are mostly suitable for adults and teens.
Invisalign are custom-made to fit the teeth as a mouth guard does. The aligners are removable, and you switch out each set of aligners after every two weeks. Invisalign may not be suitable for all types of misalignment.
Invisalign treatment may last longer than treatment with metal braces. They cost between £1500 - £5000 depending on your location, insurance coverage, and amount of work you need. Most Invisalign providers in London make the treatment affordable by allowing monthly payment plan options.
Lingual braces are regarded as a type of invisible braces because the dentist places them behind the teeth, close to the tongue. They are also similar to metal braces.
Lingual braces are hard to clean and may not be suitable for everyone. They cost between £3000 - £10,000. Treatment with lingual braces may last longer, and it takes a long time to get used to wearing the braces.
This option helps to reduce the time you will spend trying to fix your crooked teeth. Your orthodontist may recommend minor surgery to help reposition your gums and bones, so theyhold the teeth in better positions.
The orthodontist may also recommend another type of surgery called orthognathic surgery that involves realigning the jaw. You may need this surgery if your crooked teeth have affected your ability to chew or speak properly.
Your location, the amount of work needed, and dental health insurance determine the cost of your teeth-straightening surgery.
Your dentist may refer you to a specialist(orthodontist) after examining your teeth, jaw, and bite. The orthodontist may carry out further examinations on your teeth, including checking for a popping sound while opening or closing your mouth, and any physical discomfort when you chew.
The orthodontist will also take X-rays of your mouth. If you need braces, your orthodontist will take the mould of your teeth and schedule you for another appointment in order to fit the braces.
Having crooked teeth is a common problem for most adults, teens and children. You don't have to fix your crooked teeth if it does not cause you any pain. Different options are available if you have decided to straighten your teeth. Speak to your orthodontist about available payment options if the cost of the treatment prevents you from straightening your crooked teeth.

Best dentist ever hands down. Least painful and least scary experiences here (I'm usually really scared of going to the dentist, and even find the initial anaesthetic injection painful) - they really care about the patient, and making sure you're comfortable, results are also fab. Seriously can't imagine a better dentist!
After lots of research I was very happy with the results and the service at Museum Dental. 100% I would recommend to a friend. I couldn't be more pleased.
