What are the causes of crowded and overlapping teeth?

Several factors could cause crowded teeth. Some of these factors include:

  • Sucking the thumb or dummy
  • Oversized jaw
  • Having different sizes of teeth
  • Having extra teeth
  • Getting old
  • Irregular erosion of the permanent teeth

Most of these issues are common in children, but crowded teeth tend to get worse as you age. As we grow older, our jaw changes and the lower teeth may begin to move, which may result in crooked or overlapping teeth. This makes most adults straighten their lower teeth.

Most people believe that the eruption of wisdom teeth causes overcrowding, but this is not true. Although having third molars cause a lot of dental problems, it does not lead to overcrowding because they do not exert enough pressure to move the teeth.

Highly recommend Museum Dental Suite. Their work is of the highest calibre, professional and friendly. I'm very thankful they for excellent aftercare advice and for making me relaxed and so well treated. I've recommended them to both my family and friends.

I have been undertaking a cosmetic treatment (Invisalign) for around eight months here, off the back of a recommendation of a friend who had the same treatment. The professionalism and perfectionism with which my treatment was delivered was outstanding, as was the general service and were all of the staff I encountered.

My dentist Dr. Wahab Shakir was particularly great, with a friendly, reassuring manner and an eye for detail. He always went above and beyond, without ever being asked.

I'm now almost at the end of my treatment and couldn't be more pleased with how treatment has gone. Given the service and end result I'd also consider it excellent value for money.

Keep up the good work Museum Dental Suites!

Do crowded teeth cause problems?

If your teeth are crowded or overlap, it could cause the following problems.

  • Increase in the buildup of plaque and bacteria because cleaning in between the teeth is difficult
  • Speech problems
  • Increase in tooth decay
  • Low self-esteem
  • Gum disease and gingivitis
  • Unusual wearing down of the teeth

These dental problems will cause you discomfort, which you can avoid by getting treatment for your crowded teeth.

What are the options for fixing crowded teeth?

Different treatment options are available for fixing crowded upper teeth, crowded lower teeth and both. The treatment option suitable for you will depend on the severity of the crowding and how much you have for your treatment.

Children can get treatment for crowded teeth in the NHS if the overcrowding is severe and may affect the health of the child. If the crossing is minor, you may have to opt for private treatment. The NHS does not cover cosmetic dental procedures, so adults who want to straighten their teeth will carry out the procedure in a private dental clinic. There may be exceptions for people whose case are severe and did not receive treatment in childhood.

The different options for correcting overcrowded teeth for both adults and children are listed below. You would also get information about their pros, cons, and cost.

Braces

This is usually the first treatment option most people consider. Braces are a common treatment option for crowded teeth and other orthodontic issues. They are effective in correcting severely overcrowded and overlapping teeth.

Different types of braces are available for you to consider if you want to use braces for your overcrowded teeth treatment.

  • Fixed braces

Fixed braces can either be ceramic or metal. The dentist bonds the brackets to your teeth and connects them with a metal wire. The braces exert pressure on the teeth, which gradually moves the teeth to their perfect position. The benefit of fixed ceramic braces over their metal counterparts is that ceramic braces are less noticeable.

You may need your dentist to place separators between some of your teeth to create space before fitting the braces. Metal braces are the only type of brace available in the NHS for children. If your child needs a different kind of brace, you would have to get it at a private dental clinic.

  • Invisalign braces

You can also use Invisalign to straighten crooked teeth. This type of treatment uses a series of clear plastic aligners, which you would change after every two weeks, to move the teeth to their perfect position gradually.

Invisalign fixes overcrowding in the front teeth within a short time. The Invisalign Lite is designed to correct mild orthodontic issues between 6 - 8 months.  If your overcrowding is moderate, it may take up to 18 months to fix it with Invisalign.  The aligners are clear and barely noticeable despite how long you wear them.

Invisalign can correct about 90% of orthodontic cases, but the other 10% may need fixed braces. Before you can get Invisalign, your dentist will examine your teeth to check if you are a suitable candidate, then create your Invisalign treatment plan.

You may also opt for remote treatment which cost about £900 if your teeth are mildly crowded. You can carry out all the processes from taking your teeth impressions to post check-ups at home. The aligners in remote treatments like Straight My Teeth functions like the Invisalign aligners, but not everyone can get this treatment.

Retainers

You may decide to straighten your teeth without braces by using retainers. A removable or fixed (lingual) retainer can correct mild teeth overcrowding.

Some benefits of retainers for correcting overcrowded teeth include:

  • They are a cheaper option
  • The lingual retainers are not noticeable because the dentist fits them behind the teeth
  • Treatment requires only a few visits to the dentist

Veneers

Veneers can fix mildly overcrowded teeth. To fit a dental veneer, your dentist will remove some part of the enamel, then apply a composite or porcelain material on the tooth. Veneers do not straighten the teeth, but only make the teeth look straighter by covering areas of the teeth that are crooked. This provides a temporary fix from a cosmetic perspective, but it does not solve the problems that come with having overcrowded teeth. Other teeth may still be crowded after getting veneers because the pressure that moves the teeth and makes them crowded is still present.

You cannot get veneers on the NHS because it is a cosmetic dental procedure, and they are not a suitable treatment for children.

Firstly what a great dentist, all the staff were friendly and very helpful as this was my first time here.

I had called for an emergency appointment due to a sudden cracked tooth and Dr Wahab Shakir despite the end of day fast approaching (30 minutes till close) he said he would see me.

The treatment was not straight forward due to the crack but Dr Shakir after a lengthy time managed to save the tooth/restore it and prevent what I believe most dentists would have done which install a crown - Thank you!

Highly recommend this dentist and service and I am grateful for not only seeing me within an hour but also staying passed closing time and finally for doing a Stella job.

This is a top notch dentist who makes you feel at ease which for someone liked me is important. The staff are very professional, polite, courteous and friendly. Marios, my dentist is extremely patient and cares about your dental care and the service you receive. Just received my new dentures and they have been done to a very high standard and am very pleased. I have nothing but praise for the staff and the treatment/service I received.

Dental crowns

You can fit crowns to correct your overcrowded teeth. Fitting crowns will involve your dentist removing some portion of the teeth structure before fitting a metal or porcelain cap over the top of the teeth.

Fitting dental crowns can make the teeth straighter, but it is not the best option because it involves removing some parts of healthy teeth. If you want to try out this option, ensure that you speak to your dentist first.

Takeaway

It's normal for the teeth, especially those in the lower jaw to become crooked and misaligned as we age. Different options like braces, veneers, and retainers will effectively straighten the teeth. In children, it's easier to treat overcrowding and overlapping teeth. Ensure your child wears retainers to prevent the teeth from moving to their previous position after treatment.

FAQS

Do I need to remove my teeth before getting treatment for overcrowded teeth?

Removing the teeth before crowded teeth treatment depends on the individual's case. Some people are born with extra teeth (hyperdontia), and if they want to fix their overcrowded teeth, the dentist will have to remove the extra teeth. Sometimes, the dentist may extract the normal teeth, including wisdom teeth to create space to move the other teeth.

Some dentists do not recommend removing the teeth, but if your dentist suggests removing the teeth, you are entitled to opt for other treatment options for your child or yourself such as filing down the teeth before wearing braces. Filing down the teeth is not always the best option.

How do braces work on overcrowded teeth?

When your dentist attaches the braces to your teeth, they exert pressure on the teeth to move them to their right position. Invisalign braces work the same way, but they use clear plastic aligners instead of brackets and wires.

Invisalign braces are not as visible as the metal braces, and you can remove the aligners to eat and clean your teeth. Treatment with braces usually lasts between 6 – 24 months.

How long does Invisalign treatment last for crowded teeth?

One advantage of Invisalign over traditional metal braces for correcting crooked teeth is the duration of treatment. Generally, the severity of your misalignment will determine how long your treatment will last but, if your teeth are mildly crowded, you can use Invisalign Lite to straighten them within 6 – 8 months.

What are the best braces for fixing overcrowded teeth?

The best brace for treating overcrowded teeth depends on the severity of the condition. If you want to correct your crowded teeth discreetly, you would need invisible braces, but if your concern is the cost of your treatment, metal braces will be a better option.

How do I fix crowded teeth at home?

There is no way to fix your crowded teeth at home. You have the option of Straight My Teeth, where you receive your aligners and everything you need for your treatment by post. With this treatment option, you may not need to visit the dentist, and it is convenient for anyone who has a phobia for dentists.

Is it normal to feel pain from crowded teeth on my lower jaw?

When your bottom teeth are overcrowded, feeling pain is not normal. Having crowded teeth on the lower jaw could lead to tooth decay, and this could be the cause of the pain you feel. Ensure you visit your dentist if you feel pain in your teeth.

What will be the result of crowded teeth treatment?

You can ask your dentist to see the before and after pictures of previous patients with overcrowded teeth to give you an idea of how your teeth will look like after treatment. Your dentist may also create a computer simulation with the before and after views of your overcrowded teeth. If you opt for Invisalign treatment, you will automatically receive a simulation of your before and after look.

Why are my bottom teeth crowding after my braces treatment?

Using braces to treat your overcrowded teeth or any other orthodontic issue is not a permanent solution. If you received braces treatment as a teenager, it does not stop your teeth from being crowded as you age because it is part of the ageing process.

If you notice your teeth shifting back to their previous position soon after your treatment, visit your dentist, so they can adjust your retainers or offer further treatment.

How do I fix crowded teeth without metal braces?

Braces are usually the best way to fix crowded teeth, but you do not have to opt for metal braces. Clear aligners and clear braces are as effective as metal braces, and they are less noticeable

Best dentist ever hands down. Least painful and least scary experiences here (I'm usually really scared of going to the dentist, and even find the initial anaesthetic injection painful) - they really care about the patient, and making sure you're comfortable, results are also fab. Seriously can't imagine a better dentist!

After lots of research I was very happy with the results and the service at Museum Dental. 100% I would recommend to a friend. I couldn't be more pleased.

Look your best, feel your best, expect the best.
