Is It Necessary to Use Retainers Post Braces?

Absolutely! Braces patients must use retainers after treatment. This is because the teeth cannot remain straight for long with only braces. They can shift your teeth to the desired position; however, when they are removed, the teeth will relapse (return to its former crooked state).

This is common in patients who are not using their retainers as recommended. But you may be fortunate to realise your new teeth position is maintained, or you may see the teeth in its old condition; making all the orthodontic treatment fruitless.

Reasons for teeth movement post braces

Retainers after braces are meant to prevent teeth movement after treatment. While moving your misshapen teeth, the soft tissues and surrounding bones are also moved. With time, your bones take to the new position, but your gum fibres that are linked to your bone and teeth get stretched during this period. These fibres do not adjust and will always exert pressure on the teeth.

Jaw development, among other factors, contributes to teeth movement with time. Dental conditions like diastema and open bites are consequences of relapse.

What's the function of retainers post braces?

Retainers keep your teeth in their new position after treatment. It's a simple procedure. Take note that your teeth can move should you stop wearing retainers at any point in time. The good news is that modern-day retainers are not easily visible.

Dental retainer types

  • Hawley retainer
Should you have had orthodontic treatment as a young child, then Hawley retainers may ring a bell. They are still in use, but we choose the comfortable and inconspicuous Essix retainer at our practice.
  • Essix retainer
These ones look like Invisalign aligners as they are made from transparent, airless plastic shaped to fit your teeth snugly and keep them straight. These retainers are unobtrusive and typically cause zero speech impairment. Many patients after full-time wear of Essix retainer for a period are to put them on only at night.
  • Bonded retainer
Made of thin steel wire, these ones are installed behind the front 6 teeth. They are bonded in position and provide permanent resistance to relapse. You may have to wear fixed retainers for life, replacing them from time to time. Care should be taken when brushing your teeth with fixed retainers in; use an interdental brush.
  • Finding the best retainer
Your dentist will discuss how to maintain your new teeth position with you. Depending on the case, you may need bonded or removable retainers or both. Some patients opt for retainers they can remove; contact the best Invisalign provider in London. Other patients may choose fixed retainers since it's secured.

Any retainer you use, ensure you wear it for a long time. Contact your dentist at once if you lose or break your retainers.

reviews-star.pngHighly recommend Museum Dental Suite. Their work is of the highest calibre, professional and friendly. I'm very thankful they for excellent aftercare advice and for making me relaxed and so well treated. I've recommended them to both my family and friends.

reviews-star.pngI have been undertaking a cosmetic treatment (Invisalign) for around eight months here, off the back of a recommendation of a friend who had the same treatment. The professionalism and perfectionism with which my treatment was delivered was outstanding, as was the general service and were all of the staff I encountered.

My dentist Dr. Wahab Shakir was particularly great, with a friendly, reassuring manner and an eye for detail. He always went above and beyond, without ever being asked.

I'm now almost at the end of my treatment and couldn't be more pleased with how treatment has gone. Given the service and end result I'd also consider it excellent value for money.

Keep up the good work Museum Dental Suites!

reviews-star.pngFirstly what a great dentist, all the staff were friendly and very helpful as this was my first time here.

I had called for an emergency appointment due to a sudden cracked tooth and Dr Wahab Shakir despite the end of day fast approaching (30 minutes till close) he said he would see me.

The treatment was not straight forward due to the crack but Dr Shakir after a lengthy time managed to save the tooth/restore it and prevent what I believe most dentists would have done which install a crown - Thank you!

Highly recommend this dentist and service and I am grateful for not only seeing me within an hour but also staying passed closing time and finally for doing a Stella job.

reviews-star.pngThis is a top notch dentist who makes you feel at ease which for someone liked me is important. The staff are very professional, polite, courteous and friendly. Marios, my dentist is extremely patient and cares about your dental care and the service you receive. Just received my new dentures and they have been done to a very high standard and am very pleased. I have nothing but praise for the staff and the treatment/service I received.

reviews-star.pngBest dentist ever hands down. Least painful and least scary experiences here (I'm usually really scared of going to the dentist, and even find the initial anaesthetic injection painful) - they really care about the patient, and making sure you're comfortable, results are also fab. Seriously can't imagine a better dentist!

reviews-star.pngAfter lots of research I was very happy with the results and the service at Museum Dental. 100% I would recommend to a friend. I couldn't be more pleased.
