Straightening the teeth is a gradual process. No teeth straightening option will instantly move your teeth to their perfect position. The upside of straightening your teeth is that the result you’ll get will be worth the time spent.
Orthodontic treatments involve the use of removable aligners or fixed braces which straighten the teeth by gently applying pressure to the right places. The treatment also helps to remodel the bone below the gum line to hold the teeth in their new positions.
The teeth usually respond to light pressure, but if you apply excess pressure, the teeth will resist movement, and it also makes treatment more uncomfortable.
Straightening the teeth usually takes about 12 – 18 months, but some patients may undergo short-orthodontic treatment which lasts for about 4 – 6 months.
Short-term orthodontic treatment also uses braces and the same teeth movement technique used by other treatments, but, it is faster than other orthodontic treatment because it only straightens the front teeth.
If your back teeth are straight and you are comfortable with the way they bite together, you could use the short-term orthodontic treatment option to straighten your front teeth within six months.
You may also opt for short-term orthodontic treatment if you have straightened your teeth in the past, but had a relapse. You may also opt for clear Invisalign aligners or lingual braces to restore your smile.
The duration of orthodontic treatment varies, and it depends on several factors like the severity of your misalignment and the type of braces you choose. To know the exact time your treatment will take, you need to have a consultation with your orthodontist.
Sometimes, a particular brace may be more suitable for you and would help you get straight teeth faster, but no brace type is generally faster than others. For example, Invisalign treatment time for correcting open bites may be shorter than fixed braces.
Invisalign technology has helped many people half the time required to straighten their teeth, and this has saved them several months. If you decide to get Invisalign, you would have a 3D treatment plan that shows you what to expect at every stage of the treatment and the duration of the treatment.
Your orthodontist should give you an accurate time for your treatment, but some uncontrollable factors may extend the treatment time. These tips below should help prevent prolonged treatment time.
You may need additional braces or changes to your treatment plan, which may prolong your treatment time, but it helps ensure that the result of your treatment is the best.
Some techniques can help speed up your treatment, such as:
Micropulse devices are believed to move the teeth faster because they stimulate remodelling of the bone. Evidence to support this is lacking, so a lot of people do not think this technique works.
This technique involves the use of LED light to increase the flow of blood, and this causes increased tooth movement, but the evidence to support this is insufficient.
Localised trauma involves surgical treatments like piezocision and corticotomy. These treatments involve making small cuts on the bone surrounding the teeth that require movement, which helps make teeth move faster.

Highly recommend Museum Dental Suite. Their work is of the highest calibre, professional and friendly. I'm very thankful they for excellent aftercare advice and for making me relaxed and so well treated. I've recommended them to both my family and friends.
I have been undertaking a cosmetic treatment (Invisalign) for around eight months here, off the back of a recommendation of a friend who had the same treatment. The professionalism and perfectionism with which my treatment was delivered was outstanding, as was the general service and were all of the staff I encountered.
My dentist Dr. Wahab Shakir was particularly great, with a friendly, reassuring manner and an eye for detail. He always went above and beyond, without ever being asked.
I'm now almost at the end of my treatment and couldn't be more pleased with how treatment has gone. Given the service and end result I'd also consider it excellent value for money.
Keep up the good work Museum Dental Suites!
Firstly what a great dentist, all the staff were friendly and very helpful as this was my first time here.
I had called for an emergency appointment due to a sudden cracked tooth and Dr Wahab Shakir despite the end of day fast approaching (30 minutes till close) he said he would see me.
The treatment was not straight forward due to the crack but Dr Shakir after a lengthy time managed to save the tooth/restore it and prevent what I believe most dentists would have done which install a crown - Thank you!
Highly recommend this dentist and service and I am grateful for not only seeing me within an hour but also staying passed closing time and finally for doing a Stella job.
This is a top notch dentist who makes you feel at ease which for someone liked me is important. The staff are very professional, polite, courteous and friendly. Marios, my dentist is extremely patient and cares about your dental care and the service you receive. Just received my new dentures and they have been done to a very high standard and am very pleased. I have nothing but praise for the staff and the treatment/service I received.
Best dentist ever hands down. Least painful and least scary experiences here (I'm usually really scared of going to the dentist, and even find the initial anaesthetic injection painful) - they really care about the patient, and making sure you're comfortable, results are also fab. Seriously can't imagine a better dentist!
After lots of research I was very happy with the results and the service at Museum Dental. 100% I would recommend to a friend. I couldn't be more pleased.
