In an overbite, the upper front teeth vertically overlap the lower front teeth. Most persons have slight overbite of about 2 – 4mm, but when it exceeds this, it is a severe overbite, and it becomes an issue that is why most persons opt for Invisalign to treat overbite.

Severe overbites, sometimes called deep bites, can affect a person’s health, smile and appearance and this make the condition less desirable.

Effect of Overbites

Severe overbites may result in the following.

  • The recession of the chin which makes your face appear rounder and shorter
  • It may cause the upper teeth to look prominent and long
  • If the overbite makes you bite into your soft tissues, it could cause recession of the gums, and this may lead to tooth loss and gum disease
  • If the overbite causes you to bite onto other teeth forcefully, it could fracture or erode the enamel
  • If the overbite results make the teeth not to bite together properly, it may cause difficulty in chewing
  • Overbites may also make pronunciations of certain sounds difficult
  • Protruding front teeth increases the risk of accidental injury, especially if you engage in contact sports.

Some people mistake overbite for overjet, but an overjet is a condition where the upper front teeth horizontally protrude past the lower teeth. Some people have both overjet and overbite.

Causes of Overbites

The main cause of overbite is, having a lower jaw which is shorter than the average jaw size. Overbites are usually hereditary, so if one or both your parents or your siblings have an overbite, you would likely have an overbite.

Some childhood habits, like sucking the thumb and excessive use of a pacifier, also contribute to making overbites severe.

Braces for Overbite

If you want to straighten overbite, you can undergo any of the available orthodontic treatment to realign your teeth and jaw.

You can correct your overbite using different treatments like removable or fixed braces. In some severe overbite cases, jaw surgery may be the best course of treatment.

Invisalign for Overbites

Invisalign is one of the most popular treatment options for correcting an overbite. Invisalign to fix overbite uses a series of clear plastic aligners custom-made for each patient. The clear aligners help to straighten the teeth and realign the jaws discreetly. The nature of Invisalign makes it a desirable treatment option for most persons.

Invisalign aligners are removable, and it offers you the advantage of being able to remove the aligners to eat and drink anything. With Invisalign aligners, there are no eating restrictions and all you need to do, is take out the aligners first before eating, but you need to wear the aligners for at least 20 – 22 hours each day for the aligners to be effective.

Keeping the teeth clean during Invisalign treatment is also easy as you can take out the aligners to brush and floss normally. You also get to avoid gum diseases, tooth decay and other dental issues during your Invisalign treatment by cleaning your teeth and the aligners, which is relatively easy.

reviews-star.pngHighly recommend Museum Dental Suite. Their work is of the highest calibre, professional and friendly. I'm very thankful they for excellent aftercare advice and for making me relaxed and so well treated. I've recommended them to both my family and friends.

reviews-star.pngI have been undertaking a cosmetic treatment (Invisalign) for around eight months here, off the back of a recommendation of a friend who had the same treatment. The professionalism and perfectionism with which my treatment was delivered was outstanding, as was the general service and were all of the staff I encountered.

My dentist Dr. Wahab Shakir was particularly great, with a friendly, reassuring manner and an eye for detail. He always went above and beyond, without ever being asked.

I'm now almost at the end of my treatment and couldn't be more pleased with how treatment has gone. Given the service and end result I'd also consider it excellent value for money.

Keep up the good work Museum Dental Suites!

reviews-star.pngFirstly what a great dentist, all the staff were friendly and very helpful as this was my first time here.

I had called for an emergency appointment due to a sudden cracked tooth and Dr Wahab Shakir despite the end of day fast approaching (30 minutes till close) he said he would see me.

The treatment was not straight forward due to the crack but Dr Shakir after a lengthy time managed to save the tooth/restore it and prevent what I believe most dentists would have done which install a crown - Thank you!

Highly recommend this dentist and service and I am grateful for not only seeing me within an hour but also staying passed closing time and finally for doing a Stella job.

reviews-star.pngThis is a top notch dentist who makes you feel at ease which for someone liked me is important. The staff are very professional, polite, courteous and friendly. Marios, my dentist is extremely patient and cares about your dental care and the service you receive. Just received my new dentures and they have been done to a very high standard and am very pleased. I have nothing but praise for the staff and the treatment/service I received.

reviews-star.pngBest dentist ever hands down. Least painful and least scary experiences here (I'm usually really scared of going to the dentist, and even find the initial anaesthetic injection painful) - they really care about the patient, and making sure you're comfortable, results are also fab. Seriously can't imagine a better dentist!

reviews-star.pngAfter lots of research I was very happy with the results and the service at Museum Dental. 100% I would recommend to a friend. I couldn't be more pleased.

Look your best, feel your best, expect the best.
