When it comes to repairing a tooth, one of the least invasive of treatments is composite bonding. Whether you need to repair your chipped or cracked teeth, or you are looking for a cosmetic solution to staining or the shape or spacing of your teeth, composite bonding is an option you might want to consider.

What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin – it is applied to the tooth and then shaped and polished to blend in seamlessly.

Unlike veneers, crowns and bridges, which are solid pieces that typically need to be manufactured in a lab, composite bonding can be completed in a single visit to the dentist and generally requires less of the natural tooth to be drilled away – and sometimes none. This means that the entire procedure can take as little as half an hour to complete.

The process begins with the dentist etching the surface of the tooth and applies a special conditioning liquid. This creates a better surface for the resin to adhere to. The composite, which has a putty-like texture is then applied and formed to the right shape. Finally, the dental professional will apply ultraviolet light or a laser to harden the material.

Once the composite bonding procedure is finished, patients should be careful to avoid biting into hard objects. Some materials are also more prone to staining than your natural tooth, especially if you drink beverages like coffee, tea and red wine. However, the staining can be kept to a minimum with regular brushing and flossing.

With the proper care, composite bonding can last ten to 15 years and many patients have had their dental work in for even longer without any difficulties.

Benefits of Composite Bonding

One of the main benefits of composite bonding is that it is much faster and easier than other tooth repair options. Since less – or in some cases no – drilling is required, it’s also much less painful and often, patients don’t require any anaesthetic.

Not only does this mean that the procedure is faster and easier than the other options – but it’s also less painful and often patients don’t require any anaesthetic.

Other benefits of composite bonding include its natural appearance and the fact that it can be easily repaired as necessary.
