Dental Bridges Clinic in Holborn, London

Whether it’s due to tooth decay or an injury, sometimes a tooth cannot be saved and the best option for your comfort and dental health is to have the tooth extracted. However, this doesn’t mean that you’ll have to live with missing teeth – a dental bridge can be placed to literally bridge the gap between your remaining teeth.

Although most patients see their dental bridgework as a cosmetic piece that gives them the appearance of a complete smile, these restorative treatments actually have a number of benefits. For example, they can help to ensure you are able to properly chew, bite and speak, they are important in maintaining the shape of your face and they can prevent your remaining teeth from moving out of position.

As specialists in dental rejuvenation, the team at Museum Dental Suites have extensive experience in placing bridges and other dental restorations. Based in central London, we work hard to provide a professional and relaxing atmosphere and we’ll work with you to enhance your dental health and create a smile you can be proud of.

How Does a Dental Bridge Work?

Dental bridges are permanent pieces that attach to healthy teeth via a dental crown. The process of having a bridge placed usually requires two visits to the dentist.

During the first appointment, the dentist will remove a small layer of the teeth that will be crowned. They will then take an impression of the teeth, which will be sent to the lab where the bridge will be manufactured. Making the permanent bridge will usually take a couple of weeks, so the dentist will place temporary crowns while you wait for your follow-up appointment.

On the next visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crowns. They will then place the permanent crown in position in order to check the fit of the crown and your bite. If necessary, minor adjustments can be made. Then, using a special cement, the dentist will attach the permanent dental bridge to the appropriate teeth.

After the permanent crown is fixed in place, patients must be sure to maintain good oral hygiene habits. This is especially important as the health of the surrounding teeth will be vital for the dental crown. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to floss underneath the bridge and, with proper care, the bridge should last for many years.

The Options Available

Dental bridges can be used to replace a single tooth or more than one. Although they are most commonly attached to existing teeth, they can also be mounted to dental implants. Sometimes, cantilever-style bridges are placed, which only attach to a single tooth. The right choice will depend on your specific situation and your dentist can recommend the best option for your dental health.

There are also a number of materials that dental bridges can be made from. Porcelain is a popular choice, as it offers a natural appearance that blends well with your other teeth. Precious metals like gold can also be used.
